Going for a Burton: Leica Sofort instant camera teams up with snowboard pioneer

Yet another iconic collaboration hits the piste as Leica matches its Sofort Instant camera with snowboarding pioneers, Burton Snowboards. The new Leica Sofort 2 Burton Edition is inspired by the exclusive Jake Blue design.

In addition to its striking pattern, the Sofort 2 Burton is characterised by the Burton logo on the top cover. The camera comes with a practical Burton camera bag. According to Leica, the Leica Sofort 2 “embodies a clear, minimalist design while offering a range of creative possibilities on the go. With versatile modes such as selfie, landscape, and macros, it also features ten lens and film effects, ensuring a great photographic experience”.

Gap bridging

Leica says that the Sofort 2 “seamlessly bridges the gap between digital photography and the tangible analogue world. The camera allows users to print selected photographs directly”. Using the FOTOS app, it can also print images created with smartphones or another Leica camera.

Leica Sofort: Corkboard

Jake Burton Carpenter, the founder of Burton Snowboards, has dedicated his life to the sport, transforming his backyard pastime into the world-class discipline we know today. He is a keen photographer and captured his inspirations with his Leica camera, taking photographs of friends and family and posting them on a corkboard in his kitchen.

The Leica Sofort 2 Burton Edition will be available globally at Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store and authorised dealers from today, 11 February 2025. The recommended price, including tax, is £530 | €595.

What do you think of the Leica Sofort Burton? Will you be strapping it round your neck in the Kitzbüheler Alps later this season?

After accessing other reviews, it’s clear that Burton special edition is technically identical to the less expensive Leica Sofort 2 – on which I’m almost ‘hooked’ – and suits many events participants’ needs and requirements – e.g., instant photo documentation of family gatherings / reunions / weddings /workplace functions etc., etc.

The Burton variant’s ‘plus’ factor is the dedicated bag and Burton logo but for UK use they’re irrelevant.

In short, I cannot see the point of the Sofort Burton for my potential UK use. After consulting other reviews I am considering the regular and less expensive Leica Sofort 2. I’m particularly interested in investigating the camera’s 10cm macro / close-up photography capabilities – for local nature reserves’ “open days” and potential production of souvenir photos for visitors.
